Mind men’s mental health

This April, I step into the cage for a structured, beginner-level charity MMA event in London. Eight weeks of focused coaching. Properly matched opponents. Strong emphasis on safety, discipline, and respect.

No theatrics. Just preparation and execution.

Growth rarely arrives politely.

Sometimes it asks you to step toward something that makes your stomach flip.

This year, I’ve said yes to exactly that.

On 12 April 2026, I’ll step into the cage at a charity MMA fight in Croydon. It’s a beginner-level event with structured coaching, matched opponents, and a strong emphasis on safety and respect. No bravado. No shortcuts. Just commitment.

With a background in competitive gymnastics, I’m no stranger to disciplined training, body control, and technical coaching but this is a new arena. I’m approaching it as a student again.

Why This Matters

At Maxwellness, we talk about intentional stress.

The kind you choose.
The kind that strips away ego.
The kind that reveals who you are when comfort is removed.

MMA does that immediately.

You can’t fake conditioning.
You can’t fake composure.
You can’t fake skill under fatigue.

Weakness shows up fast. So does growth if you’re willing to stay humble.

I didn’t sign up to prove anything to anyone else.
I signed up because challenge sharpens me.

Excitement is there.
So are nerves.
Both mean it matters.

THE TRAINING

Two months out, the focus is deliberate and structured.

Wrestling

Wrestling has become a cornerstone of my preparation.

It is brutally honest conditioning.

It demands elite cardiovascular output, a high VO₂ max, explosive power, agility in scrambles, strong shoulders, resilient joints, and deep core control under pressure.

There is nowhere to hide when you’re fighting for position while exhausted. Wrestling builds not just fitness but grit, balance, and spatial awareness under load.

At the moment, wrestling feels like my strongest base.

Mixed Martial Arts

My MMA training combines Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, boxing, and elements of Tae Kwon Do.

It’s creative. It’s fluid. It requires switching between disciplines under pressure.

The technical depth of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been especially rewarding. Rotator cuff strength, shoulder stability, flexibility, and abdominal core control developed through years of gymnastics and strength training translate powerfully onto the mats.

Mobility and joint integrity are just as important as brute force.

CONDITIONING AND RECOVERY

The fight is one night.

The preparation is months.

Managing recovery is now as important as pushing hard. Overtraining helps no one.

I’m balancing wrestling, MMA skill work, strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and mobility work while protecting my nervous system and avoiding burnout.

Outside the gym, discipline continues. No smoking. No alcohol. No processed food. High quality protein from red meat and eggs. Managing cortisol and sleep. Reducing blue light before bed. Prioritising recovery to support long term health and performance.

This isn’t about extremes. It’s about sustainability.

TRAINING IS THE REAL WIN

The cage is one moment.

The training is transformation.

Early mornings. Sore shoulders. Learning to breathe when my lungs burn. Staying calm when someone is trying to dominate me.

Confidence isn’t declared. It’s built rep by rep, round by round.

This is beginner level by design. Properly matched. Properly coached. The risk is managed. The growth is real.

Why We’re Sharing This

Maxwellness isn’t about perfection.

It’s about choosing hard things for the right reasons.

Health isn’t just green juices and quiet mornings. Sometimes it’s sweat, fear, discipline, and showing up when quitting would be easier.

I’ll share parts of the journey not to glorify violence and not to chase extremes but to document what happens when someone commits to becoming more capable.

April is coming.
The work is already underway.
